A Burger King gift card is an easy present for anyone who likes a Whopper, and a decent way to cap your own fast food spending. A few things are worth knowing before you buy one, and even more before someone asks you to pay a bill with one.

Where to buy Burger King gift cards

  • At participating Burger King restaurants. Ask at the counter.
  • From Burger King online. Check bk.com for gift card options, including digital cards where available.
  • At retailers. Many supermarkets, pharmacies and big-box stores sell restaurant gift cards on their gift card racks.
Avoid resale sites that sell heavily discounted cards from unknown sellers. If a card has already been used or was bought with stolen money, you may not get your money back.

How to check your balance

Use the gift card section of Burger King’s official website, bk.com, or ask a cashier at a participating restaurant. Only check your balance on the official website: fake “balance checker” sites exist to steal card numbers and PINs.

How to use a Burger King gift card

  • In the restaurant: hand the card to the cashier when you pay.
  • In the app: check the payment options in the BK app to see whether gift cards can be added to your account at your location.
  • Keep the card until the balance reaches zero, and keep the receipt from when it was bought.

Gift card terms, including where cards are accepted, are set by Burger King and printed on the card or its packaging. Read them before you buy, especially if the card is a present for someone in another country.

Gift card scams to avoid

Gift cards are a favorite tool of scammers because the money is hard to trace. The US Federal Trade Commission warns that anyone who demands payment with a gift card is a scammer. Watch out for:

  • calls or messages claiming you owe money to a government agency, utility or company and must pay with gift cards;
  • “free gift card” offers that ask you to complete surveys and enter personal details;
  • cards on store racks with scratched or exposed PIN areas, which may have been tampered with.

If you’ve been targeted, contact the company that issued the card as soon as possible and report the scam to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Holiday gift card bonuses

Around the holidays, many restaurant chains offer a bonus card when you buy a set amount in gift cards. If Burger King runs a verified offer like this, we’ll add it to our deals page.
